7 Reasons Women Succeed in Business
Women are powerful. You know this, I know this. And it must be said: women are powerful. We’re lucky to be living in a time where women are able to showcase their power and build our Queendoms from it. Business is no exception. In 2019 alone, there were 11.6 million women-owned businesses that generated over $1.7 trillion in sales. So, why do women excel in business? Here are six reasons why we, women, succeed in business:
1. Excellent network builders
Establishing relationships, particularly those with customers, influencers, and competitors, is essential to success in business. Women have this skill for networking because historically we’ve been taught to nurture. This social skill helps businesswomen to develop and maintain effective relationships with clients, employees, and colleagues alike. Fostering these relationships is a large part of what makes a business profitable.
2. Communicate effectively
Great leaders are effective communicators. According to Forbes, women’s communication strengths lie in our listening skills, our ability to read body language and nonverbal cues, and our effective displays of empathy. These skills help women leaders succeed in business in two fields. First is networking, or fostering effective relationships with customers and colleagues. Second is in workplace communication, or creating a space for coworkers and employees to collaborate and thrive. Women’s skills in communication lead to a healthier work environment and a smarter, more profitable business.
3. High emotional IQ
Emotional intelligence boils down to four things: self-awareness, emotion management, empathy, and social skills. Women have excellent emotional intelligence, which means that we are capable of approaching business with care and consideration for others. We nurture a work environment that is comfortable for clients and coworkers. And this leads to profitable businesses.
4. Open to collaboration
Women leaders are passionate and driven. No surprises there! But because women are such effective communicators, we understand the value in collaboration. Being unafraid of consulting with colleagues and employees makes women able to gain other perspectives, positioning us to be well-rounded leaders who make more informed business decisions. Additionally, collaboration fosters a better work environment.
5. Willing to accept mistakes
No one loves to make mistakes. But women are much more willing to take mistakes in stride. We understand that they are inevitable–– and necessary–– to be successful. Not only are we willing to accept our mistakes, but we actively learn from them. We make an effort to transform our current shortcomings into future strengths. In business, this translates to women-led businesses being more resilient and profitable in the long-term.
6. Methodical mindset
Women tend to prefer growing their businesses methodically, which leads to steady, profitable growth. Generally, women avoid risky business strategies that might negatively affect their financial situations. We understand that successful business isn’t a risky race to the finish line–– it’s hard work, communication, and smart business decisions.
7. Farsighted
Women are great at seeing the big picture, and skilled at compelling people to action. These qualities contribute to our skills as leaders. A Harvard Business School study found women entrepreneurs scored significantly higher in “Vision And Influence”, meaning they had clearer goals, and their teams believed in those goals. The combination of having a clear vision for the future, and the skill of rallying others to help make it a reality, are skills that significantly contribute to women being effective leaders.
