Create Community Through Networking

A community is not a network of unrelated people that you contact occasionally when you need something. Community is built by making connections between people who meet each other’s needs, while also building a sense of trust and belonging among them. The focus is on building relationships above all else. So, with that in mind, let’s discuss how to create community through networking.

Be a connector

Connect people in your network. Be on the lookout for ways to introduce people within your network to each other. Make sure the connections will be mutually beneficial, and anything good that comes from it, will always be credited to you. This is a sure way to strengthen your connections with people and grow your network too. When people connect to each other, that’s what makes a community. And the stronger their connections, the stronger your community.

Give credit where it is due

People love being recognized for the amazing things they do or the helpful services they provide. So, whenever possible, give credit to those in your network. This will motivate them to continue to do awesome things and help strengthen your bond.

Build confidence

Compliment others. Hire them, and let them know you’re doing it for their skills, knowledge, and talent. When you make people feel good, they always show their true selves and it facilitates a genuine relationship.

Give more than you get

There is no better way to solidify relationships with others than giving. If someone needs help, offer resources, or your time, to help them. Provide free resources on your website for people seeking help. The key is to give and expect nothing in return. This will surely help create and strengthen relationships that will benefit you and the members of your community.

Ask for favors

It’s not all about giving. It’s also about knowing when to ask for help. Don’t be afraid to tap into your community. Even if you think someone does not like you, asking them for a small favor can actually completely change their opinion of you. If they didn’t like you before, they will like you after they’ve done you a small favor. This is called the Benjamin Franklin Effect. Whatever the situation may be, people like to help others, so asking for favors can actually strengthen your bond with people in your community.

Invite people to events

Ideally, invite them to your event. But if that’s not possible, invite them to go to events with you. It’s impossible to keep up a one-on-one relationship with all of the members of your network. But hosting your own event, allows you to keep connections alive with more of your connections.

Now that you know the major difference between a network and a community. My hope is that you use these techniques to take your networking efforts to the next level. Focus on creating relationships. And create a community of people around you who will support one another. Because when you help create and cultivate relationships, everyone succeeds together.
