What is Networking Anyway?
You’ve read tips on how to network like a maverick, and even how to digitally network. But what even is networking? Believe it or not, you do it all the time. Like I always say, “ABC - Always Be Connecting.” When you talk to friends, family, coworkers, anyone, about business, you’re networking.
Networking is nuanced.
But it’s more nuanced than just talking. It’s about meeting and getting to know people who can help you grow in your business or career. Getting to know people in various contexts and networking circles is key. And once a connection is made, maintaining the relationship is crucial.
It’s about building relationships.
It’s not just about meeting as many people as possible, but about getting to know people. Making connections means you meet for a Zoom meeting or a coffee, exchange emails, or even collaborate on business projects.
It takes time.
Networking and building relationships that will benefit you takes time. And it’s something successful professionals make time to do throughout their career, not just when they need something. If you ask for something too soon or only reach out to people when you need something, your connections might start to avoid you. With networking - as with every other skill - practice and patience make perfect.
Networking opens doors.
The hope is that you create a network of people you can rely on. Building social capital means that you have people in your network who will help you and others in your network succeed. For example, you know someone who needs a professional outfit for a speaking engagement, but they don’t know who to ask for help. Take that as an opportunity to introduce them to the personal fashion stylist in your network. By connecting people to others who can help, you are helping everyone succeed. You are adding value, and increasing your social capital. This will most likely result in people introducing you to others in their circle. And thus, opening doors to new business opportunities.
Now that you know what networking is, you are armed with the knowledge that networking is more than just shaking hands and exchanging business cards. It’s about building relationships too. And the best way to do that is to practice, practice, practice. So go out and network to build that social capital!
Happy Networking!
